saved to disk, or replied to or ditched! EMail is a generic term to refer to all types of electronic
mail, including that on the internet.

emulation
This is where one device is configured to device to ape the operation of another. For example, the
Apple Macintosh can run special software to emulate a PC running Microsoft Windows.
error correction protocol
In relation to data transmission, a set of rules negotiated by modems to ensure that a transmitted file
is received intact (ie without error). Example protocols are MNP4 and V42. Error correction is
also performed by most file-transfer protocols.
extended character set
A collective term for several platform-specific character sets describing 128 characters additional
to the original 128 of the ASCII character set. Mostly used for lines and graphics symbols.
