offline
Being disconnected from an on-line service such as a bulletin board, or the Internet. See on-line.

offline reader
Software that can automatically, and quickly gather e-mail, conference messages, or Usenet news upon connection to an on-line service, and then disconnect from the service, allowing the user to read his mail offline.

OneNet
A loose network of bulletin boards running the FirstClass server, set up to exchange messages in a similar way to FidoNet and Usenet. OneNet includes several medical conferences.

on-line
Being connected to an on-line service, bulletin board, or Internet. See offline

On-line Service
Incorporating similar facilities to a BBS, an on-line service is typically a large commercial network offering many additional resources and services to a greater number of people.

operating system
A set of special programs and routines a computer uses to perform basic tasks like starting up the computer and managing files. DOS, Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, Windows 95, IBM OS/2, and UNIX are operating systems.

OS/2
An operating system marketed by IBM originally in conjunction with Microsoft and now in competition with Microsoft Windows.
