WAIS
Wide Area Information Service
Wide Area Information Service (WAIS)
A server that supports client access to a database indexing the full contents of documents relating to a particular subject.
Searches are built in plain English, and relevance feedback is sent back to users to identify documents that best match your
search criteria.
wide-area network (WAN)
A network of computers, or a network of networks, situated over a wide geographic area. See local area network and
Internet.
wildcard
A character - usually an asterisk, used to substitute for an uncertain or variable character or characters in a search pattern.
For example, psych* would include psychology, psychiatry, psychological etc.
window
A key element of a graphical user interface, and the object that gave Windows its name. Data and programs appear on screen
in a series of rectangular boxes or windows

Microsoft's 32 bit graphically based operating system. It ships with a whole load of Apple Mac type enhancements. See also

Updated version of Windows 95 released in mid 1998.
Windows NT
Very robust 32 bit operating system. The first series of Windows NT had graphical user interface that looked and felt similar
to the old-style Windows 3.x series. Windows NT version 4 is virtually identical in look and feel to Windows 95, but is
technically very different. Windows 95 still sits on DOS whearas NT is its own operating system and only provides DOS in a
window. Whilst cynical observers of the computer industry claim NT stands for not tested, NT actually stands for New
Technology.
World-Wide Web (WWW)
An Internet Service which uses the metaphor of interconnected pages, each associated via hypertext links with other pages
widely distributed over the Internet. You need a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to
navigate this web of links.
