Heart To Heart

Heart Disease is a killer, it can strike at virtually any age although it is rare in younger people. Whilst most diagnosis will occur in middle age the disease will be so far advanced that treatment may not be beneficial, leading to dangerous and expensive surgery. To avoid problems in later life it is best to be aware of the tell-tale signs of heart disease.
This brief guide is intended to help you spot the signs of heart disease, and to highlight the importance of protecting yourself, family and friends. Education of the younger generation is doubly important where early bad habits become lifetime rituals.
What to watch for...
- Many People mistake heart pain for indigestion. If you regularly need antacid tablets seek advice.
- Pain associated with heart disease is often centred away from the heart, mainly in the left arm or neck.
- An increase in hot sweats.
- A noticeable greyness of skin around the face.
- Regular bouts of chest pain linked with energetic activity.
- Shortness of breath from mild exercise.
- Lethargy and fatigue.
- Fainting, dizziness or blackouts.
If you or any member of your family notice these symptoms you should seek advice.
How to safeguard against heart disease..
- Watch your weight, obesity is on the increase.
- Watch your diet, avoid processed foods.
- Regularly check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. There is often a family history of increased levels.
- Increase your exercise. Aim for 20 minutes of exercise which will leave you slightly breathless, each day.
- Stop smoking. (Remember: children brought up by smokers are more likely to smoke.)
