Designs reflecting thousands of years of African tribal heritage are currently causing a stir in the show rooms of the most prestigious British stores. They are the work of Miss Thomas Puss, a company formed by 25 year old Karen Tierney of Notting Hill London.
The graduate of the Chelsea School of Art and Design has travelled extensively across the continent and wants to bring the unique colours, textures and motifs she has found to this country's living rooms and bedrooms.
"Markets across Africa sell the most beautiful cushions and throws, totally unique
and with an essence that captures perfectly the hearts of the people and their
environment" said Karen.
"But what is right for the ivory coast isn't necessarily
appropriate to Kensington so what I am doing is combining
the flavour of the stunningly beautiful designs I have seen to what works well at
home." Available as luxurious cushions, curtains, throws and floor cushions the
design elements and production quality of appliqued and hand printed velvets
combine to give a modern feel to this range by a new name in interior design.
Soft frabics and stunning colour combinations are the perfect backdrop for
contemporary translations of ancient ethnic emblems.
Karen added "From a sweltering voodoo market place in the
remote parts of Togo to the Fourth Floor of Harvey Nichols
seems a long way - but imagination and application can bring
a touch of the exotic to anywhere."
Designs by Miss Thomas Puss are available from Harvey
Nichols, Estillo in Wimbledon and by mail order.
