Journey to a Dream

by Juleigh Martin

This story is the update to American Dream. For anyone who is interested, I have always wanted to live and work in the United States of America for a year ever since I can remember, and here is how I have worked to try to achieve this dream.

Well, since my last article, I have discovered that my dream is not going to be as easy to achieve as I had hoped. However, I thought, I like a challenge, after all winning or at least trying to over come all obstacles in life is what life is all about, right? So after a lot of umm-ing and aah-ing I decided I did not want to be one of those people who, twenty odd years from now, would sit and say "If only I had". I would rather know that I gave it my best no matter what the final outcome turns out to be. I know this - I'm not going to give up without a fight!

So, what have I been doing to try to reach my goal? In answer to that - I have put my resume together, with some help from a friend who has been a great help, guide and support to me. He has also helped me to research and find different companies to send my resumes to. Some are in fields I have always wanted to work and other are fields I have a little more experience in. Why has he been a great help? Well, because although well educated, when I went to school we were never made to research anything. With all good intentions to learn how to research I was until now never able to. With patience from my friend who is one of life's "dot the I's and cross the T's" he has given me some of the skills required.

With my resume sorted out and some companies to send it to I decided a covering letter explaining what I wished to achieve would be appreciated. After all it would not leave the recipient wondering why they had received my resume.

I have to say I sent some of my resumes to high profile, very popular places in America. Although rejected by one of them they were polite enough to write to me explaining why, which is more than I can say for a lot of British companies these days who never bother. Thank you to them as currently I'm still residing in England. I am also very pleased to say that not all have been rejections. I have had some replies showing an interest and thank you to them too. I look forward to meeting with those companies very soon.

When writing this it's less than a week till I get on that plane. Am I nervous? Yes. I feel calm in myself but I have a very strange digestive system that just takes over when I'm not looking, just to remind me that I am nervous. But hey you did not really want to know that. Am I looking forward to it? Yes.

Next stop America!
