Changes To Hong Kong Immigration Controls for British Citizens

The following information concerns British Citizens who are not eligible (or who may not wish to apply) for resident British citizen status and who intend to remain in the territory after the implementation of the new immigration controls coming into effect on April 1st 1997.

For British citizens who have taken up residence in Hong Kong prior to the implementation date but who have not yet acquired 'resident British citizen' status, they may continue to work or live in Hong Kong until their current limit of stay expires. If they then wish to continue their stay in Hong Kong, they will have to apply for an extension of stay within the four weeks prior to the expiry of their limit of stay. Their applications will be considered in accordance with the same immigration policy applicable to other foreign nationals then prevailing.

Applications may be made in person or by a representative to the British Citizens Unit, Immigration Department, 6th Floor, Immigration Tower, 7 Gloucester road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. Application form ID 91 and sponsorship form ID 428B are attached.

There are transitional arrangements for British citizens who used to work here but have left Hong Kong for a while and return to Hong Kong to continue to work after the implementation of the new policy. If their previous limit of stay has not expired, they will continue to be given the same limit of stay.
