A Recipe

by

Jonathan Day

 Take four raindrops.

One large and heavy

That fell in our direction at

such a pace

last Autumn,

One that appeared from

nowhere on a summers day

that glanced briefly against your cheek.

One that missed you completely

but encompassed within

the color of the storm.

One that was not yet ready to come

and along its entire journey

struggled to return skyward.

And failed.

Take two colors of the rainbow.

choose carefully.

Blue for its coolness.

Nurture it.

Red for its passion.

Hold it still.

Take the early morning dew.

Be humble before it.

Add a feather of a dove

that has travelled far.

And take one more object of beauty

that is your choice alone.

Store the mixture for time to learn.

Let her drink.

And if you believe,

she will love.
