After having spent two weeks in the sun having a great deal of fun I finally realized that for me home is Florida. So I began to investigate the possibility of living and working in the USA. Well it's not as easy as you or I might hope. All First World countries are tightening up their immigration policies as war and economic hardship drives the dispossessed and economic migrants to seek better life styles in the affluent west. Sadly the poverty which prevented the workers from being educated means that most find themselves in a country whose language they do not understand, illiterate and unemployable. So often the American or Western lifestyle is perceived through the TV soap screen and the new migrant hopes to find the streets paved with gold without seeing the hard work which this lifestyle entails.
The resulting burden on social services and benefits payments mean that American immigration applies strict entry criteria:
For historical reasons some groups of applicants will have an easier time when applying for an entry visa. The nineteenth century famine and political ineptitude which drove the Irish from their lands and homes to seek new lives abroad, now works in their favour as most Irish people will be able to find a relative settled in the USA.
To date I find I am not the marrying type and I will need to get a work permit to live in America. So I am researching the employment skills which I need in order to gain valid employment.
Despite the horror story surrounding Louise Woodward the Americans are still enchanted with the idea of an English nanny and there are several agencies, both in the USA and UK which offer a nanny placing service. Be prepared for strict reference checking and previous experience children is generally required.
Good IT skills and computer literacy are a great asset as is a foreign language, particularly Spanish. Many areas of Miami are non-English speaking as the Hispanic history of America has finally conquered the language of the Old World..
In the meantime I am looking for work in the West Pasco Area through to Tampa and I would be very grateful if you would e-mail me any job vacancies at arieschild17@hotmail.com
