Is Computing A Cottage Industry?

by John Stevens

We live out in the sticks, between Southampton and the cathedral city of Salisbury. Our neighbourhood watch area stretches about half a mile along our road, comprising of about 20 households, and we get together quite often for mainly social gatherings.

Nearly all the men in our neck of the woods are called John. To distinguish between the Johns, we follow the Welsh method -

John the Farmer, John the Plumber, John who is always just back from abroad, etc. and of course I am John the Computers.

I was thinking about John the Plumber. He gets call-outs from people with leaks and other watery things which have stopped working. He puts together schemes to supply water and heating for specific properties, quotes a price and does the work.

We get call-outs from people with computery things which have stopped working. Meanwhile, we put together schemes for computer equipment to meet specific needs, quote a price and do the work.

Probably blacksmiths of old, did much the same, except they never had to fight with metrication, or Windows 95!
