The smile

by Jonathan Day

" What film shall we see ? "
She didn't answer
But smiled at him.
And it was the smile of
The woman he knew.

He was late home from
work.
She smiled at him.
And it was the smile
of a habit in concrete.

They had their first argument
And then made up.
She smiled at him.
And it was the smile of
someone hurt.

They broke up.
And this time there was
No smile.

On what might have been
their first anniversary
Their trolleys crashed at
the supermarket.
She smiled at him
And it was the smile of a love lost.

Weeks later he saw her
at a bus stop in
the rain.
She smiled at him
and it was the smile of
A stranger.
