Earlier this year, She That Must Be Obeyed had me plant six rather expensive Portuguese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) trees at the end of our garden. At first they did very well - grew about 20cm in two months. But now some of the leaves are showing signs of what appears to be Vine Weevil. The adults are bad enough but they only eat the leaves. Their grubs, are much more destructive and spend much of the late summer and autumn devouring the roots. There are various pesticides available - but I have a fundamental aversion to using such things. An alternative solution is to use nematodes. Now, there are various types of nematode but the type we are interested in are called "Steinernema Kraussei".

From my albeit limited research, it seems these are entomopathogenic (insect killing) nematodes - tiny, soft bodied, non-segmented roundworms around 700µm to 1400µm long. Apparently they attack the weevil grubs via the oral and anal cavities, devouring them from the inside. Then they multiply and go looking for other grubs to eat for their dinner.
