The GarfNet Guide To Netscape 2.x

Welcome to The GarfNet Guide For Netscape, This guide has been specially designed by Garfield Lucas and Mike Jones of The New Millennium Magazine to help you get to grips with the vagaries of the Netscape World Wide Web browser.

There are two ways you can use this guide:

  1. Simply scroll the page up using the scroll bars or
  2. Click on the graphic below in the area of interest.

Note: If an area isHot then the mouse pointer changes to aHand

We've tried to make it as easy as possible for you, and you can use a combination of the two methods if you wish.

Some features are only available to users of Netscape Version 2, and are marked: (version 2 only) - and there are other minor variations between one version and another. This guide is based around Windows versions of Netscape, although most of it applies to the various Mac versions too. Give it a whirl anyway, you should find it useful.


Throughout the guide you will find the following button...

This will return you to the graphic below.



TheBack button takes you back to the last page you visited, so if you have jumped to the wrong page, the Back button lets you jump back again.

 


TheForward button takes you to the page you have just done aBack operation from. Note: Obviously theForward button willonly work after you have used theBack button


TheHome button takes you to your initial default start up page. This location can be changed by going into theOptions menu,General Preferences... item, and then hitting either theStyles item in the Preferences dialog if you are running version 1.* or by hitting theAppearance tag if you are running version 2.*.
This allows you to edit all your variousStartup options.



TheReload button forces the browser to reload the current page. This is used when the page has not been fully loaded (signified by aTRANSFER INTERRUPTED message at the bottom of the page) or if you want to update the current page


TheImages button allows you to see any images that should be loaded with the current page. Note: This button isonly active ifAuto Load Images isn't ticked in theOptions Menu.


TheOpen button allows you to open aURL or a file, by entering the URL or File name (including path) in a dialogue box

 



ThePrint button prints the current web page.

 


TheFind button lets you search the current document for specific words or phrases.

 


TheStop simply stops a page loading. Note: TheStop button isonly active whilst the page is actually loading

 



Menus


TheFile menu allows you to access the file functions.
New Web Browser(version 1.2 or later) allows you to view more than one web page simultaneously. Note: The amount of pages allowed is determined by setting theNumber of Connections in theOptions-Network Preferences... menu, under the CONNECTIONS tag.
New Mail Message (version 2 only) opens ane-mail entry form so that you can sende-mail from within Netscape. Note: This will only work if youre-mail settings have been entered into the browser under theOptions-Mail And News Preferences - SERVERStag.
Mail Document... Opens a newe-mail message with the current pageattached, this allows you to send the current document to another user viae-mail.

 

Open Location...simply type in your chosenURL, by entering theURL in the pop-up dialogue box. This function is similar the Open button.
Open File... Opens a standard Windows file dialogue box. It is designed to let you view pages that you have previously stored on your machine.
Save As... opens a standard Windows file dialogue box. Use this to save web pages and *.jpg images on your own computer.

Page Setup... (version 2 only) Sets up the current page for printing, margins etc.
Print... Sends the current page to the printer. Note: This function is duplicated by thePrint button.
Print Preview Previews the output of the printer on screen.

Close This function shuts down the current page of the browser. Note: If you only have one page open this function completely shuts down Netscape.
Exit This function completely shuts down Netscape.

 



TheOptions menu allows you to customize Netscape.
General Preferences... Opens a dialogue box that allows you to optimize Netscape for your system
Mail and News Preference... Opens a dialogue box that allows you to configure the Netscapee-mail and News reader facilities.
Network Preference... Opens a dialogue box that allows you to configure the Diskcache size and directory, alter the size of the memory cache and purge both caches. This dialogue has a help button which gives more details about the function of Disk/memorycache and setting them up.

Security Preferences... Allows you to specifiy the security alert criteria. These allow the user to know when they are entering/leaving a secure document space or server. Note: Users shouldNEVER transmit sensitive information (credit card numbers etc.) to an insecure space or server. You don't know who might be listening.

Show ToolbarShow Location andShow Directory Buttons All allow you to customise the display, if an item is ticked it will be displayed.

Auto Load Images If this Item is ticked any graphics that are encoded with a page are automatically loaded with the page. If this function is not ticked images have to be loaded manually by pressing theImages Button

Document Encoding (version 2 only) Change the display font. Note: Thisonly works if the font is available on your machine.

Save Options Saves the current configuration as the default start up configuration.



TheBookmark menu allows users to Keep a list of frequently visited links. Clicking onAdd Bookmark automatically adds theURL of the current page is to your Bookmark file.

Clicking onGo to Bookmarks opens a dialogue box that allows you to arrange the bookmarks into a preferred order and createfolders to put the bookmarks in..

 


TheGo menu keeps a record of the sites visited during the current session. To visit an earlier site simply click on any in the list. Note: The sites are listed in the order you visited them, with the most recent at the top and the oldest at the bottom.
Back takes you back to the previous page. Note: This function is duplicated by theBack button.
Forward takes you to the page you have just done aBack operation from. Note:Forwardonly becomes active after aBack operation. This function is duplicated by theForward button.

Home takes you to your initial default start up page. This location can be changed by going into theOptions menu, General Preferences... item, and then hitting either theStyles item in the Preferences dialog if you are running version 1.* or by hitting theAppearance tag if you are running version 2.*. Note: This Function is duplicated by the Home button.
Stop Loading stops the current page from fully loading. Note: This function isonly available during the loading process and is duplicated by theStop button.



TheWindow menu allows users to open other functions of the browser.(version 2.* only.)
Netscape Mail opens the Netscape e-mail application.
Netscape News opens the Netscape news reader application. Note: Both these applications have to be setup in theOptions menu before they will function.

Address book Allows you to store and edit e-mail addresses.
Bookmarks opens a dialogue box that allows you to arrange the bookmarks into a preferred order and create folders to put the bookmarks in. Note: This function is duplicated in theBookmarks menu.
Historyopens a dialogue box that shows all the URLs visited during the current session and allows you to create new bookmarks without re visiting the site. 



TheLocation area allows you to inputURL directly. you must click on the location box in the area of the text, this allows you to highlight the text and replace it or simply delete the text and type in the newURL. Note: Text can also be "Cut & Pasted" into this area from other documents.
