LAN
Local Area Network.

laptop computer
A small computer, often as powerful as a desktop computer, but much smaller and portable. See also Notebook computer

leased line
An expensive, high speed, constant connection to the Internet that is leased from an Internet Service Provider or telephone company.

line feed
An ASCII control code used on some computer systems to indicate the beginning of a new line of typing.

LISTSERV
A mail server used on BITNET to manage discussion groups, the equivalent of mailing lists on the Internet.

loading
Copying an application of file into RAM from storage on a hard disk, floppy disk, remote computer, CD-ROM etc.

Local-Area Network (LAN)
A network of computers physically located on the same premises, or within a relatively small geographic area.

local echo
A modem setting which shows everything you send down to a remote computer on the screen of your machine - an echo of the characters being sent to the remote host.

log off
Disconnecting from a remote computer in a controlled manner - rather than simply pulling the plug! Synonymous with log out

log on
Connecting to a host computer. Often you need to type in a login or user name and a password. Synonymous with log in
