V.22bis
A modulation protocol enabling compliant modems to transfer data at speeds up to 2400 bps prior to the application of compression protocols.

V.32
A modulation protocol enabling compliant modems to transfer data at speeds up to 9600 bps prior to the application of compression protocols.

V.32bis
A modulation protocol enabling compliant modems to transfer data at speeds up to 14 400 bps prior to the application of compression protocols.

V.34
A modulation protocol enabling compliant modems to transfer data at speeds up to 28 800 bps prior to the application of compression protocols.

V.42
An error correction protocol standardised by the UN agency, ITU-T.

V.42bis
A compression protocol, theoretically quartering transmission time.

Vector File (Vector Image File)
Vector data is a collection of geometric shapes that combine to make an image, recorded as mathematical formulas. Vector data cannot reproduce photo-realistic images, but for other types of images it has two advantages over raster data: it is scaleable without distortion (the "jaggies" that come with re-sizing a bitmap), and it produces smaller files. See bitmap and metafile.

Veronica
The name of a search engine which locates objects indexed by Gopher, such as a keyword in a menu or document title.

VGA
Video Graphics Array

Video Graphics Array (VGA)
A PC graphics standard requiring compliant systems to be capable of displaying 256 colours with a screen resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

video RAM (VRAM)
Memory chips used by a computer, in combination with other video circuitry, to produce the image on the screen of a monitor. The amount of VRAM relates to the number of colours that can be simultaneously displayed and the resolution of the image. 2MB or better still 4MB of VRAM will provider in excess of the standard 256 colours at most screen resolutions

Viewdata
A type of terminal which can display text and basic colour graphics.

virtual reality
The computer-generated simulation of a physical environment that permits interaction with the virtual objects within it. Unfortunately, dial-up connections to the Internet are not fast enough - they lack the necessary bandwidth, to support virtual reality.

virus
A Virus is a small program which attaches itself to files which allow your computer to perform tasks - causing unusual or unexpected results.

VT100
The most universal type of terminal.
