telecommunications
Communications over telephone lines or other cables, satellites and radio links including conversations between people or the exchange of digital information between computers, fax machines or other devices.

telemedicine
The use of telecommunications technology and computers by health-care providers to overcome the problems of physical distance between hospitals and patients.

Telnet
The name of a protocol forming part of the TCP/IP protocol suite used on the Internet. Also an Internet Service, where a Telnet client emulates a 'virtual Internet terminal' allowing users remote access to a host computer.

terminal
This usually refers to a dumb terminal, a monitor and keyboard providing access to a central host computer, but without its own microprocessor (a smart terminal does have a microprocessor).

terminal emulation
The imitation (emulation) of a physical terminal by communications software. A terminal emulator can be used over a telecommunications link to interact with a host that might be thousands of miles away. Popular terminal types to emulate include, TTY ANSI, VT100, and RIP.

text
Data consisting of standard ascii or ansi characters.

Thin film transistor display (TFT)
A type of active matrix technology used in expensive notebook computer screens to display an image.

threading
Message threading refers to the ability of a conference message reader or Usenet news reader to automate a user's ability to follow a thread. That is, to read all the messages in a particular conversation in the sequence in which they were posted, rather than a chronological sequence of individual messages pertaining to many conversations posted to the conference or newsgroup.

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
A protocol system including TCP, IP, SMTP, FTP, Telnet and many other protocols operating on the Internet.

TTY
An acronym for teletype, a very basic type of terminal.
